How Bluetooth Works: Versions, Range, and Why It Sometimes Drops

Bluetooth is the technology people notice only when it misbehaves. It works invisibly for weeks, then refuses to connect the one morning you are late, or cuts out every few seconds when you put the phone in your left pocket rather than your right.

Those failures are not random. Bluetooth operates under real physical constraints, and almost every irritating behaviour has a specific, understandable cause. Once you know what the radio is actually doing, you can usually fix the problem in under a minute rather than repeatedly forgetting and re-pairing the device in frustration.

This guide covers what Bluetooth is, what the version numbers genuinely change, why audio quality varies so much between devices, why the connection drops, and what to do about it.

What Bluetooth is

Bluetooth is a short-range wireless standard for connecting devices directly to one another, without a network in between. Phone to earbuds. Laptop to mouse. Phone to car stereo. Watch to phone.

It operates in the 2.4 GHz band — the same crowded stretch of spectrum used by Wi-Fi, microwave ovens and a great deal of other equipment. That sharing explains a large share of Bluetooth’s reliability problems, and we will come back to it.

Range is nominally around ten metres for typical consumer devices, though this varies enormously with obstacles, and the most significant obstacle is usually a human body.

Classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy

There are effectively two different technologies wearing the same name, and knowing which is in use explains a lot.

Classic Bluetooth carries a continuous stream of data. This is what audio uses — headphones, speakers, car systems. It consumes meaningful power because the link is constantly active.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) sends small bursts occasionally and sleeps between them. This is what fitness bands, smart watches, tags, sensors and most smart-home accessories use. A BLE device can run for months on a coin cell precisely because it is asleep almost all the time.

Modern phones support both simultaneously. A single pair of earbuds may use classic Bluetooth for audio and BLE for control signals and battery reporting.

What the version numbers actually change

Version numbers get printed on boxes with the implication that higher is automatically better. Broadly it is, but the improvements are specific.

Bluetooth 4.x introduced Low Energy — the change that made wearables and sensors practical.

Bluetooth 5.0 roughly doubled speed and substantially increased range for low-energy connections, while also improving coexistence with Wi-Fi.

Bluetooth 5.1 and 5.2 added direction-finding, which enables accurate item tracking, and a newer audio architecture with better efficiency and the ability to broadcast audio to multiple receivers.

Bluetooth 5.3 and 5.4 refined power consumption, connection reliability and security.

Two practical notes. First, both devices must support a feature for it to apply — a Bluetooth 5.3 phone talking to older earbuds communicates at the older capability. Second, version number tells you very little about audio quality, which depends on codecs instead.

Why Bluetooth audio quality varies so much

This is the part that confuses people most, and it has nothing to do with the version number.

Bluetooth does not have the bandwidth to carry uncompressed audio. The sound must be compressed before transmission and decompressed at the other end. The method used is called a codec, and both devices must support the same one.

SBC is the universal fallback. Every Bluetooth audio device supports it. Quality is acceptable rather than good.

AAC is used heavily by Apple devices and works well on them.

aptX and its variants are common on Android and generally offer better quality or lower delay.

LDAC targets higher-resolution audio at higher bitrates.

If your expensive headphones sound mediocre on one phone and excellent on another, the codec being negotiated is the usual explanation. The devices fall back to the best option both support, which is sometimes plain SBC.

Delay matters too. Video and games need audio to arrive in step with the picture. Standard Bluetooth introduces enough delay to be noticeable, which is why some earbuds advertise a low-latency mode and why lip-sync problems are common when watching video on cheap wireless earbuds.

Why the connection drops

Almost every dropout traces to one of these.

Your body is in the way. The 2.4 GHz signal is absorbed effectively by water, and people are mostly water. A phone in your back pocket with earbuds on the opposite side is transmitting through you. This is the single most common cause of one earbud cutting out while walking, and simply moving the phone to the other side usually fixes it.

The band is congested. Bluetooth shares 2.4 GHz with Wi-Fi and much else. In a crowded building, interference is constant. Bluetooth hops between frequencies rapidly to cope, which usually works and occasionally does not.

Distance and walls. Ten metres is optimistic. Through a concrete wall, expect considerably less.

Battery is low. Some devices reduce transmit power as the battery drains, shrinking effective range before they warn you.

Too many connections. Phones can hold several Bluetooth links at once, but each one competes. A watch, earbuds, a car and a fitness band together can strain the radio.

Stale pairing data. Occasionally the stored pairing record becomes corrupted and produces repeated failures that nothing else explains.

Fixing Bluetooth problems, in order

Work down this list; the early steps solve most cases.

  1. Move the phone to the same side of your body as the earbuds. Sounds trivial, resolves a remarkable proportion of dropouts.
  2. Toggle Bluetooth off and on. Clears transient radio state.
  3. Restart both devices. The earbuds usually reset by returning them to the case and closing it.
  4. Forget the device and pair again. This clears corrupted pairing data. Remove it from the phone’s list first, then pair fresh.
  5. Check the battery on both ends.
  6. Move away from a router or microwave if the problem is localised to one room.
  7. Disconnect other Bluetooth devices to reduce competition.
  8. Update firmware. Earbuds and speakers frequently receive fixes through their companion app, and people rarely check.
  9. Clear the charging contacts. Dust and lint on the case contacts cause one earbud to charge poorly, which then appears as a connection fault.

Buying advice worth knowing

If you are buying wireless earbuds or a speaker in Nigeria, a few practical points.

Counterfeits are widespread. Popular models are heavily faked, and fakes look convincing in photographs. Buy from a seller you can return to, be sceptical of prices far below the market, and check that the companion app recognises the device — a fake generally fails there.

Check the codec support against your phone if audio quality matters to you.

Multipoint — the ability to stay connected to two devices at once, such as a laptop and a phone — is genuinely useful and not universal.

Battery claims assume moderate volume. Real figures come in lower, particularly with noise cancellation active.

A case that charges by USB-C is worth insisting on now that most other things have standardised on it.

The short version

Bluetooth is a short-range radio link operating in a crowded band, using compression to squeeze audio through limited bandwidth. Version numbers describe range, efficiency and features; codecs determine how it sounds; and physical obstacles — especially your own body — determine whether it stays connected.

When it fails, move the phone to the other side, toggle the radio, then forget and re-pair. Those three steps fix the large majority of problems, and none of them require buying anything.
