Choosing a Laptop for Video Editing: What Actually Matters
Video editing is where laptop specifications stop being marketing and start mattering. Unlike most work, it will saturate whatever you give it — processor, memory, storage speed, graphics — and the difference between an adequate machine and a poor one is measured in hours of waiting.
It is also where people most often buy the wrong thing, because the components that matter for editing are not the ones that get advertised most loudly.
What actually matters, in order
1. RAM
16GB is the floor. 32GB is the target. 64GB if you work with high-resolution footage or complex multi-layer projects.
Editing software holds a great deal in memory: the timeline, previews, effects, cached frames. When memory runs out, the system swaps to disk and everything stalls — playback stutters, scrubbing becomes unusable, and exports slow dramatically.
This is the specification most likely to be the bottleneck, and the one most under-bought.
2. Storage — capacity and speed both
Video consumes space extraordinarily quickly. A single project can run to hundreds of gigabytes.
Fast internal SSD, 1TB if you can, 512GB as a minimum. Speed matters for scrubbing through footage and for rendering.
A second drive or fast external for media, keeping the system drive free. Working from a slow external drive over a slow connection will bottleneck everything regardless of how good the rest of the machine is.
The practical setup: fast internal SSD for the system and cache, larger external SSD over a fast connection for footage, and a separate drive for backup.
3. Processor
Genuinely matters here. Encoding, decoding and effects processing are processor-heavy, and core count helps because these tasks parallelise well.
Look for a current-generation chip with a good number of performance cores, and — importantly — one in a chassis that can actually cool it. A powerful processor in a very thin laptop throttles within minutes of a sustained export, delivering a fraction of its potential.
Sustained performance matters more than peak performance for this work.
4. Graphics
Helps considerably with effects, colour grading, and hardware-accelerated encoding.
VRAM matters for high-resolution work. 8GB is a reasonable target for 4K.
Check that your editing software supports the specific hardware — acceleration support varies between applications and brands, and the software’s documentation is the place to confirm.
5. Screen
Colour accuracy matters if the output will be seen by others. Look for high sRGB coverage, and DCI-P3 if you work in that space.
Resolution and size determine how much timeline you can see. 15 inches or larger, Full HD minimum, higher if affordable.
An external monitor is frequently a better investment than a larger laptop screen.
6. Cooling and noise
Rarely specified, genuinely important. Sustained exports run the machine hard for extended periods. A laptop with poor cooling throttles, extends export times, and eventually damages its own longevity.
Independent reviews that test sustained load are the place to check this. Manufacturer specifications never mention it.
The Apple Silicon consideration
Worth addressing directly because it changes the calculation.
Apple’s M-series chips include dedicated media engines for encoding and decoding common video formats. In practice this means Apple laptops handle certain codecs — particularly the ones phones record in — extremely efficiently, with long battery life and near-silent operation.
For editors working in those formats, a MacBook frequently outperforms a Windows laptop that costs more and runs hot and loud.
The counterarguments in Nigeria are real: high purchase price, expensive repair, and limited local service compared with the alternatives. Storage upgrades at purchase are also expensive and cannot be changed later, which matters for a workload that consumes space.
What matters less
The very fastest processor tier, if cooling cannot sustain it.
Thinness. Actively counterproductive here.
Touchscreen.
Peak brightness, unless you work outdoors.
The Nigerian context
Power is the practical constraint. Exports run the machine at full load, which drains a battery quickly and is exactly when you do not want an outage. A UPS for the working area, or planning exports around power availability, is a real part of the workflow here.
Heat. Ambient temperature affects thermal throttling. A laptop stand that lifts the machine and allows airflow underneath genuinely helps, and costs very little.
Storage costs. External SSDs are a significant purchase. Budget for them as part of the machine rather than as an afterthought, because editing without adequate fast storage is miserable regardless of the laptop.
Backup. Video projects represent a great deal of work. A drive failure without backup is catastrophic. Keep footage in more than one place.
Refurbished workstations are worth considering. Ex-corporate mobile workstations frequently offer strong processors, upgradeable RAM to 64GB, multiple drive bays and proper cooling, at a fraction of new prices. Check battery health and fan condition.
Software note
Free options are genuinely capable now. DaVinci Resolve’s free version is a professional-grade editor and colour grading tool at no cost, which matters when software subscriptions are billed in dollars.
For anyone starting out, this removes a substantial barrier and means the money can go into the machine and storage instead.
A sensible target configuration
- 32GB RAM
- 1TB fast internal SSD, plus external SSD for media
- Current-generation processor with good sustained performance
- Discrete graphics with 8GB VRAM, or Apple Silicon
- 15-inch or larger, high sRGB coverage screen
- A chassis known to cool well
- A UPS for the working area
The realistic budget tiers
Entry. A machine with 16GB of RAM, a fast SSD and integrated or modest graphics. Workable for 1080p editing with proxies, slow for 4K, and it will require patience during exports. Perfectly viable for learning and for social content.
Mid. 32GB, discrete graphics with 8GB of VRAM, a well-cooled chassis. This is where editing stops feeling like a fight. For most people making video seriously, this is the sensible target.
High. 32GB or 64GB, strong discrete graphics, a colour-accurate screen, 1TB or more of fast storage. For client work and high-resolution footage.
The most common mistake is buying a machine with a powerful processor in a thin body with 16GB of RAM. It will look impressive on paper and throttle within minutes of an export while running out of memory on a complex timeline.
Proxies: the technique that changes everything
Worth a section, because it is the single most useful thing to know for editing on affordable hardware.
Editing software can generate low-resolution copies of your footage — proxies — which it uses for playback and scrubbing. When you export, it automatically switches back to the original high-resolution files.
The result is that a machine which stutters trying to play 4K footage directly will handle the same timeline smoothly using proxies. Only the final export uses full quality, and that runs unattended.
This means a mid-range laptop can edit footage that would otherwise require a far more expensive machine. Every major editor supports it. If you are editing high-resolution video on modest hardware and not using proxies, this will transform your experience more than any hardware upgrade you could afford.
Storage strategy for editing
A workable setup, in order of importance:
- Fast internal SSD for the operating system, the application and the cache. Cache location matters — putting it on the fastest drive helps noticeably.
- External SSD on a fast connection for active project footage. Editing from a slow drive bottlenecks everything.
- Larger drive for archive of completed projects.
- A separate backup copy of anything irreplaceable.
Working from a single drive, particularly a slow external one, is the most common cause of an editing setup feeling broken when the laptop itself is fine.
The short version
RAM and storage first, processor and cooling second, graphics third. 32GB of memory and a fast 1TB drive will do more for your editing experience than a higher processor tier in a thin chassis that throttles.
Sustained performance matters more than peak, so read reviews that test under prolonged load rather than trusting specifications.
Apple Silicon is genuinely excellent for this work if the purchase price and repair situation are acceptable to you. Otherwise a well-cooled Windows machine, or a refurbished mobile workstation, is the sensible route.
And budget for external storage and a UPS as part of the setup, not as extras. Editing without both is considerably harder than the specification sheets suggest.
