VPNs Explained: What They Do, What They Don’t, and When You Need One

VPN marketing is among the most misleading in technology. The advertisements suggest a VPN makes you anonymous, protects you from hackers, and is essential for basic online safety. None of those claims survives examination.

What a VPN actually does is narrower and still useful — for specific purposes, in specific situations. Understanding which is the difference between a sensible purchase and a subscription that provides a false sense of security while achieving nothing.

What a VPN actually does

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server operated by the VPN provider. Your traffic goes through that server before reaching its destination.

Two consequences follow:

Your internet provider cannot see what you are accessing. They can see that you are connected to a VPN, and how much data, but not the contents or destinations.

Websites see the VPN server’s address rather than yours, which means they see the server’s location rather than your own.

That is it. Everything else claimed for VPNs derives from those two facts or is untrue.

What it does not do

Being blunt, because the marketing is not.

It does not make you anonymous. You have simply moved the point of visibility from your internet provider to the VPN provider. They can see what your provider previously could. You are trusting them instead.

It does not stop you being tracked. Websites identify you through accounts you log into, cookies, and browser fingerprinting. Logging into your usual accounts through a VPN identifies you as thoroughly as ever.

It does not protect you from malware or phishing. An encrypted tunnel to a fraudulent website delivers you securely to the fraud.

It does not secure a compromised device. Malware on your phone reads your data before it enters the tunnel.

It is not required for public Wi-Fi safety in the way it once was. Almost all websites now use HTTPS, which already encrypts your traffic. The old scenario of someone reading your banking session over café Wi-Fi is largely obsolete. A VPN adds a layer, but the danger it addresses has mostly been solved.

When a VPN genuinely helps

The legitimate cases, which are real:

Accessing content restricted by region. Streaming libraries, services unavailable in Nigeria, tools that block certain countries. This is the most common honest reason people use one.

Working with a company network that requires it for access to internal systems. This is the original purpose of the technology.

Preventing your internet provider from seeing your browsing. Whether this matters is a personal judgement.

Untrusted networks, as an additional layer.

Avoiding provider throttling of specific traffic types, where that occurs.

Circumventing network-level restrictions on a workplace or campus connection.

The Nigerian context

A few points specific to here.

Speed and latency cost is real. Your traffic takes a longer path, and if the VPN server is in Europe or North America, latency increases substantially — which matters for calls, gaming and anything interactive. Choosing a server geographically closer, where available, reduces this.

Data consumption increases slightly because of encryption overhead. Marginal, but real if you are on a metered bundle.

Payment. Most VPN subscriptions are dollar-priced and naira cards are frequently declined for international payments. Many providers accept alternative methods.

Free VPNs are the wrong answer. This deserves emphasis. Running a VPN service costs money, so a free service is monetising you somehow — typically by logging and selling browsing data, injecting advertising, or in the worst documented cases, using subscribers’ connections as exit points for other people’s traffic. A free VPN inverts the entire purpose of using one.

If you cannot pay for a reputable service, you are better off using no VPN and relying on HTTPS than using a free one.

Choosing a provider

If you have a genuine use case, the things that actually matter:

A no-logs policy that has been independently audited. A claim alone is worth little. Look for a published third-party audit, and for a provider whose claims have been tested — some have been verified through court proceedings where they were unable to produce data they did not have.

Jurisdiction, which affects what a provider can be compelled to disclose.

Server locations, including ones geographically near you for speed.

Modern protocols, such as WireGuard, which is faster and more efficient than older options.

A kill switch, which blocks traffic if the VPN drops rather than silently exposing you.

Clear ownership. A number of VPN brands are owned by the same parent companies, and some have questionable histories. Look into who actually runs it.

Realistic marketing. A provider claiming complete anonymity is misrepresenting its own product, which tells you something.

Practical setup

  • Use the provider’s own app rather than manual configuration, for the kill switch and protocol handling.
  • Choose the nearest server unless you need a specific country.
  • Enable the kill switch.
  • Test for leaks using one of the DNS leak test sites.
  • Turn it off when not needed to avoid the speed and data cost.
  • Understand it does not replace basic security — updates, unique passwords, two-factor authentication and not sharing OTPs matter far more.

The honest recommendation

Most people do not need a VPN for security. HTTPS already covers the threat the advertising describes, and the practical risks — phishing, weak passwords, sharing an OTP, an outdated device — are entirely unaffected by one.

If you want one for accessing region-restricted content, that is a legitimate and honest reason, and a reputable paid service is a reasonable purchase.

If you are considering one because an advertisement suggested you are unsafe without it, the money is better spent on a password manager, which addresses the way accounts are actually compromised.

The short version

A VPN encrypts traffic between you and a server, hiding your browsing from your internet provider and your location from websites. That is the whole function.

It does not make you anonymous, does not stop tracking, does not prevent phishing or malware, and is no longer necessary for public Wi-Fi safety now that HTTPS is near-universal.

It genuinely helps for region-restricted content, corporate network access, and privacy from your provider.

Never use a free VPN — the service is being paid for by something, and it is usually your data. And if security is your motivation, a password manager and two-factor authentication will protect you far more effectively for less money.
